Hi, I’m Shuyan. I grew up in Shanghai, China. I came to the U.S. for college after 5 years of primary school, 4 years of middle school, and 3 years of senior middle school in Shanghai. My favorite extracurricular activities are karaoke and cycling. (I miss my bike in Shanghai. I believe my dad hasn’t sold it. It’s an old bike.) I came to UT to learn new things. Some major parts of it are making mistakes, understanding mistakes, and correcting mistakes. I’ve been doing well on hitting all three of these so far! I still have a long way to go though.
I’m taking this class because my C++ knowledge is very limited and I want to learn more about it. I used it in Dr. Gheith’s Operating System class, but I felt like I’ve only scratched the surface. Also, I want to make good use of this summertime. I am still in the U.S. and, without any timezone problems, I shall definitely take another class with Professor Downing.
I am familiar with the Collatz part of the first lecture. Cold calling keeps me focused, but seeing other people’s faces and my own face on the screen feels a little weird sometimes. Today, I went out cycling with my cousin. Going outside and seeing real people other than my aunt and cousins made me really happy. Her dad’s bike is very good, but the seat is too high for me, which makes it a little scary.
I took this picture when I first arrived at my aunt’s house in Georgia in late April, right after my flight.
